Chapter 8: Paid in Full

Adelina's POV

On Tuesday morning I went to the bank to beg.

I had my father's hangar deed in a folder and a clean shirt.

I had a speech about paying twelve thousand in October and the rest by spring.

The loan officer had a plant on his desk and a kind, sleepy face.

He took the folder from me and did not open it.

"Ms. Sedillo, you don't have a note with us anymore," he said.

"I'm sorry?"

"It was paid in full yesterday morning. Cashier's check, nine o'clock."

I sat very still.

"Who paid it?" I asked.

"Armijo Farms," he said. "I assumed you knew."

I said thank you.

I said it three times, and my voice was perfectly polite.

He had not said a word about it.

I put my forehead on the steering wheel.

I had trusted him because he said it in a warm voice.

In July he had borrowed forty-one thousand dollars against my father's hangar.

I did not find out until a bank taped a letter to the door.
