Chapter 22: The Wedding That Wasn't

The organ played the processional twice.

By the third time, the guests had begun to murmur behind their programs.

Porter's mother sat in the front pew with her back rigid and her smile frozen on.

"She's late," a woman whispered behind me. "Brides are always late."

"Not by twenty minutes," said another.

Finn leaned toward me.

"Do I get to sit on someone now?"

"Not yet."

"I'm very strong, Millicent. I want that on the record."

The organ stopped in the middle of a note.

Every head turned toward the side door.

Bree walked out of the sacristy in the ivory gown with her bouquet in one hand and the officiant's microphone in the other.

She hadn't come down the aisle.

She walked up the altar steps, from the side, and stopped a yard from Porter.

The church went silent.

"Bree," Porter said, low. "What are you doing?"

"Something I should have done in the spring."

She lifted the microphone.

Her hand was shaking, and she let everyone see it.

"I'm sorry to keep you waiting," she said, and her voice carried to the last pew. "I know most of you came for a wedding."

A man near the front laughed nervously.

"There isn't going to be one."

A gasp ran along the pews.

"Bree." Porter's mother was on her feet. "This is hysteria. Sit down."

"I'm not hysterical." Bree didn't look at her. "I'm done."

She turned to the guests.

"Eight months ago I was in debt, and Richard Winslow cleared it. In exchange, he told me what to say at Millicent Alden's engagement party, and when to say it."
