Chapter 10: The Log

Elliot's POV

The board met at two, on the fortieth floor, around a table I had sat at since I was twenty-six.

Nine directors. The chairman at the head.

Hallie had asked me for one thing before I went in.

She had stood in my office with my phone still glowing in her hand and said, "Don't clear me. Not yet."

"They'll say you did it."

"Let them. Then I'll show them who did."

"Hallie."

"Rule three," she said. "Don't decide this one."

I hated it.

I said yes.

The chairman slid a printout down the table to me.

"Eleven fifty-two on Tuesday night," he said.

"Our Hudson Yards number went from this building to Corbin Group's inbox. The login is H. Brennan.

She quit that afternoon, Elliot. She knew the number better than anyone alive."

"She did not send it."

"The trace says she did."

"The trace says her login did."

"And you're sleeping with her," said a director on the left, mildly.

Nobody laughed.

I looked at him until he looked at the table.

"Who handed you this?" I said.

"Your new assistant brought it to my office this morning. She was concerned. She had noticed the account was still active."

I turned my head.

Ivy Dalton sat in the corner chair with a legal pad on her knee, taking minutes.

She looked up at me with wide, worried eyes.

She had been very good for a week. She had made the coffee right on the second day.

I had noticed that, and I had not liked it.

"Ms. Dalton," I said. "Where were you at eleven fifty-two on Tuesday night?"

"At the desk, sir. You kept me there."

"I did."

"I was trying to get home."
