She Took My Husband on My Wedding Night, I Didn't Find Out Until We Gave Birth Together novel · Chapter 13 of 32

Chapter 13: First Laugh

I grabbed for the phone.

Valerie was faster.

She snatched it off the marble and held it against her chest with both hands.

I came around the table.

"Give it to me."

I caught her wrist.

The one with the whisk on it.

She screamed.

Then she let her knees go and folded onto the kitchen floor, phone and all, and screamed again.

"Bradford! Bradford, help me!"

Footsteps on the back stairs.

Bradford came into the kitchen barefoot in a gray T-shirt and pajama pants, hair flat on one side from a pillow.

New York.

He flies back at six.

"He was upstairs," I said. "The whole time. You told me he was in New York."

Valerie was sobbing on the floor with the phone hidden under her.

"She just showed up," she wept. "I heard the gate and I came down and she grabbed me."

"You buzzed me in. You called me at 2:07."

Bradford looked at me.

He looked at the waiver on the table, and he didn't ask what it was.

Then he took his phone off the counter and dialed three numbers.

"Yes," he said. "I need the police. My wife has broken into my house and assaulted the mother of my son."

"Your wife," I said. "You remember that part."

"Sit down, Clementine. They'll be here soon."

"I'm not sitting in this kitchen."

The kettle screamed on the stove.

Nobody turned it off.

The police arrived within ten minutes. Two officers, a man and a woman, with their hands near their belts.

Valerie held out her wrist to the woman officer.

There was a pink mark on it where my fingers had been.

"She just grabbed me," Valerie whispered.

"She called me." I held out my phone with the call log open. "2:07 a.m. Four minutes. Ask her what she said."

The woman officer read the screen.

"There's a video on her phone," I said. "Of her putting pills in my water on my wedding night. She showed it to me ten minutes ago. That's why I grabbed her."
