Chapter 13: What He Knew

Tara slept by four.

I stood at the foot of her bed until the monitor settled into one steady number, and then I walked out past the curtain.

Silvio was in the corridor by the vending machines.

He still held the paper cup.

He hadn't drunk any of the coffee, and it had gone cold in his hand.

"Not here," I said.

"The chapel is empty."

"I know where it is. I work here."

We went into the little room behind the lobby, with its eight chairs and its fake candles, and I shut the door.

I didn't sit.

"Say it," I said. "All of it. Start in September."

He set the cup on a chair.

"Your mother came to the social club on a Tuesday," he said. "She had an appointment. She wore a good coat and brought a folder with your nursing license in it."

"My license."

"She said her eldest was twenty-eight, healthy, steady, and had no one. She said you would do what you were told. She said the debt could be paid with you."

"What did you say?"

"I said I don't buy women." His voice stayed level. "I told her to take her folder and go home. I told Bruno to make sure she got to her car."

"And then you parked outside her house."

"Yes."

"Every Sunday."

"Four Sundays."

"Why?"

He looked at the fake candles.

"I wanted to see what she'd sell," he said. "And I wanted to see you. I told myself the first was the reason."

I walked to the end of the row of chairs and back.
