Chapter 8: Rule Two

I knocked once.

The door opened before my hand dropped.

Silvio stood there with his shirt unbuttoned to the waist and the white gauze square on his shoulder.

He had taken off his shoes, and his hair was wet from a shower.

"Mrs. Carrara," he said.

"Rule two," I said. "Separate rooms."

"I remember it."

"I'm standing in the hall. The lock is on my side of my door, and I'm not in my room."

His mouth moved at one corner.

"That's a loophole."

"It's your rule. You can take it up with the lawyer."

He didn't laugh.

He looked at me for a long moment in the light from his bedroom, at the nightshirt and my bare feet.

"Four Sundays," he said. "I sat in that car and watched you cross the street with a plate. Not once did you look at the window."

"I'm looking now."

"I know." His voice dropped. "That's the problem."

I stepped over the threshold and put my hands flat on his chest.

His heart was going hard under my palms.

"Claire."

"I'm not asking you for anything you didn't offer on the dance floor."

"That was said where you couldn't do anything about it."

"So say it where I can."

He took hold of my face in both hands, and then he kissed me the way he had not kissed me in the church.

There was no audience in it.

He kissed me until my back met the doorframe, until my fingers were fisted in his open shirt and a sound I didn't know I could make came out of me into his mouth.

He pulled the nightshirt over my head in one motion.

I wasn't wearing anything under it.
