Chapter 7: Home Again

Kit stood under the oak for a full ten seconds.

Then she tucked the camera into the front pocket of her hoodie and walked back toward my kitchen door.

The screen went dark.

Seth sat up in the quilt and swore, low and long.

"She knows," he said. "She knows someone's been watching the house."

"Good," I said.

"Good?"

"Scared people make mistakes."

I was already pulling my dress over my head.

"Emme, she has months of pictures of herself in her pocket now. She'll burn them."

"You have them on your phone."

"I have them on three drives," he said. "But it doesn't matter. She'll know that you know, and so will Nolan."

"They already know I know. I poured that glass out in front of sixty people."

I found my shoes.

"The only thing they don't know is that I'm going home."

"You're not."

"I told Nolan I needed a few days. It's been one."

"Because I kissed you?"

"Because I'm not leaving my house to them."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he pulled on his jeans and went down the ladder.

I heard him take a sealed water bottle out of the case by the stove.

He climbed back up and handed it to me.

"Take it everywhere," he said. "Don't let it out of your hand."

"I won't."

"And call me every night."

"Seth."

"Every night, Emme. Or I come up that driveway and I don't care who's on the lawn."
