Aldren turns to the clerk before the receiving folio is closed. 'I need to correct my countersignature on the bond-reading.'

The clerk pauses with the blood-reading finding held above the record. The panel waits. Kael stands beside me, keeping the space between us mine to close.

The amber shimmer forms around Aldren's head.

His spoken words come first. Under them, a second voice presses through: They will ask about the old entry. Say only what she made you sign.

I keep my face still. Aldren looks at the clerk, not at me.

'You may do so,' the clerk says. 'The correction will be recorded as your statement. It will not replace the material already before the panel.'

'Understood.' Aldren's hands lie flat beside the folio. Ink remains in the creases of his fingers. 'I countersigned the bond-reading page. My certification was not genuine.'

A murmur runs along the petitioners' benches. Eln raises one hand, and the sound stops.

'Please identify the basis for that statement,' she says. Her voice is formal, every word placed for the record. 'The panel requires an account of your own acts, rather than a conclusion concerning their validity.'
