Chapter 39: The Place That Cannot Be Bought
The bell over Dov's door rings, and I know before I turn that Kael has brought paper.
My clinic is mine. I paid for the shelves, the remedies, and the brass plate above the counter. The pack is trying to put its hand inside it, and Kael has brought the offer himself.
The customer collecting an order stands by the door, a basket hooked over her arm. She glances at the sheet in Kael's hand, then at me. My name is on her receipt. Mine alone.
Kael sets the folded offer on my counter. The brass plate catches the afternoon light behind him.
' The panel is prepared to restore your formal standing,' he says. 'The offer requires the practice to serve pack needs under council oversight.'
The seal is unbroken. The edges lie square with the counter. I already know what the council has placed inside. First, the title. Then the leash.
'You brought it here.'
'I thought you should read the terms before you decide.'
He doesn't call it generous or tell me I owe the pack an answer. He waits with his hands at his sides while the paper sits between us.
The counter smells of dried mint and beeswax. Behind the herb shelves, Dov works in the back room. The customer's order is packed and paid for. She hasn't left.
I could let Kael watch me consider what the pack can restore, as though standing were the only thing I wanted back.
That is what I let him think.
I open the offer. The first paragraph records the council's willingness to return the authority attached to my Luna standing. The next puts the practice's hours, supplies, and services under council oversight. The last gives the pack direction over its use.
