Chapter 40: A Chair Kept Open
Amber light bloomed around Kael's head as he crossed the threshold. Beneath his spoken question, another voice reached me: The review is closed. The children are safe from my claim.
My hand stayed on the table. He had kept the thought to himself, and I would not make him answer for words he had chosen not to say.
'May I come in, Sera?'
Dov held a knife in one hand and dried thyme in the other. Vessa sat beside her at the worktable, the grey wax key hanging at her waist. The chair across from them was empty.
I let Kael wait. This room belonged to us. He would enter because I let him, not because his name opened every door.
'Yes.'
He stepped inside and stopped clear of the door. He did not look at the chair. His attention settled on me, then moved to Dov and Vessa.
'Vessa,' he said. 'The council has recorded your account. Your archive placement has ended. No one has ordered you returned to the pack.'
Vessa watched him. 'That is not the same as asking where I want to stay.'
'No,' Kael said. 'It is not.'
Dov set down the thyme. 'She chose this room. That answer is enough.'
'It is.' Kael looked back at me. 'The council recorded Lirien's admission concerning the locket.'
The knife in Dov's hand stopped against the board. Vessa's gaze sharpened.
'What did she admit?' I asked.
Kael chose his words with care. 'That she placed it at Maren's bedside. She said she wanted the gift story to seem true.'
