Chapter 4: The Offer

The colonel's office was on the second floor of the brigade building, across the parking lot from the hospital.

I got there at five minutes to two with my neck stitched and my wrist wrapped in a fresh splint.

The captain who had pushed the wheelchair opened the door and closed it behind me.

The colonel was standing.

He wore his uniform again, pressed and buttoned, and the only sign of the night was how carefully he turned.

"Sit," he said.

I sat.

He did not.

On the corner of his desk stood a paper cup from the hospital cafeteria.

Two empty sugar packets lay next to it.

I looked at it, and I looked away.

"The man you saw won't talk," he said. "Not to my officers, not to the military police. He has a name that isn't his and no fingerprints on file."

"What did he want?"

"The lieutenant in bed four is a witness in a court-martial that starts in six weeks. Someone wanted him unable to testify."

I nodded slowly.

"The badge he wore belongs to a real doctor," the colonel went on. "That doctor has been on leave in Germany for a month. Someone at the hospital handed that badge to a stranger and opened two locked doors for him."

"Someone inside."

"Yes."

I thought about the country club dining room, where the whole table had looked at their plates while Keaton held my wrist.

This was worse, because somebody had planned it.

"I'm the only person who saw his face," I said.

"The tech was looking at a monitor. The guards came after. You are the only witness who can pick him out of a room or put him with whoever sent him."
