Chapter 11: Fourteen Days
Behind me, the whole gallery heard it.
I stopped on the top step.
Fourteen days.
The Cup was six weeks away.
Odile had known that when she wrote clause nine, and she'd known it when she smiled at me now.
I turned around.
"Then I'll pay it in fourteen days," I said.
"With what?"
"With whatever I have to." I looked past her at Armand, still holding his glass with the ring in the bottom. "Have the lawyer ready, Mademoiselle. I'd hate to stand in the courthouse and wait."
Aurore and I walked home down the bayou road in our ball dresses.
Neither of us said a word for half a mile.
Then Aurore said, "You dropped it in his glass."
"I did."
"With the bubbles."
"There were bubbles."
She started to laugh.
I started to laugh too.
Then I sat down on a stump by the road in my good blue silk and put my face in my hands.
"Four thousand dollars, Aurore."
"I know."
"In fourteen days."
She sat down on the stump next to me, which wasn't big enough for two, and put her arm around me.
"Thirteen and a half," she said. "It's after midnight."
Laurent came to our gallery at dawn.
He hadn't slept either.
He stood at the bottom of the steps with his hat in his hands, and he didn't come up.
"I can sell Gambit," he said. "And Papa's saddle. And I'll go to the bank in New Iberia and borrow the rest in my own name."
"Against what?"
"Against my wages for the next twenty years."
"Odile pays your wages."
He didn't have an answer to that.
