I held out my hand for the paper.
The sheriff gave it to me.
He'd known Papa twenty years, and he looked at our split front door instead of at me.
"A prayer book," I read out, "bound in black leather, a gold cross on the cover, and a paper kept inside it. Taken from the study at Belle Rive on the twenty-sixth of December."
"By the little one," Odile said.
Aurore leaned the shotgun against the wall, very slowly, so everyone could watch her do it.
"Good morning, Mademoiselle Odile," she said. "Happy New Year."
"Search the house, Sheriff."
He came in wiping his boots.
Odile came in after him without wiping hers.
Laurent was in the hall in his trousers and his cut-sleeved shirt, the sling knotted crooked.
Odile looked at him.
Then at the door of my room behind him.
Then at me, barefoot, in Papa's coat.
She didn't say a word.
She didn't have to.
"Start with the kitchen," Aurore told the sheriff. "The coffee's there."
He searched the kitchen.
He opened the flour bin and the bread box and the drawer where Mama kept the good spoons.
