Chapter 27: Odile's Fall
Odile didn't answer him.
Armand came up the steps of the judges' stand with his silks hanging open and stood beside his brother.
The same face, side by side, for the second time in a month.
This time the whole parish knew which was which.
"Every birthday," Armand said to the crowd, "she came and sat on my bed."
His voice was raw.
"Every third of March. She'd fix my collar and say, you were first, Armand. Twenty minutes before him. You're the one God meant." He laughed, and it broke in the middle. "When I was twelve I asked her why we looked the same if I was the real one. She said God gives the elder the face and the younger a copy of it."
Somebody in the stands said, "Mon Dieu," very softly.
"She told me he was the spare." Armand didn't look at Laurent. "She told me never to let him forget it. So I didn't. Not once in twenty-eight years."
He turned to the Belle Rive box.
"Tell them I'm lying, Tante."
