Chapter 32: Belle Rive
The first foal of the Lacombe stud came at three in the morning on the last day of April.
The brown mare I'd bought at the auction lay down in Papa's old box stall and groaned.
Aurore ran up the bayou road in her nightgown to wake us.
Laurent knelt in the straw with his sleeves pushed up.
I held the lantern.
"Front feet," he said. "Then a nose. Come on, girl."
The feet came.
Then the nose.
Then all of him at once, wet and black and folded up.
The mare turned her head and began to lick him.
Aurore sat down in the straw with her hand over her mouth.
"He's black," she said. "He's black like Sable."
"He's yours," Laurent said.
She looked up.
"He's the first one. He belongs to the girl who held the gate." He wiped his hands on a sack. "You can name him anything except Armand."
The colt tried to stand and fell over his own legs.
Aurore laughed until she cried.
She named him Shotgun.
By May, Belle Rive and the Lacombe barn were one stud with one ledger.
