Chapter 15: The Owner

Nate's POV

The owner of the Alder was seventy-four years old, and he held meetings in a corner office with a view of a parking structure.

He had hired me eight years ago and had never once asked me to sit down.

Friday at nine he asked me to sit down.

Carter Nordstrom was already in the other chair, in the gray jacket, with a folder on his knee.

"Nate," the owner said. "Mr. Nordstrom has made a complaint."

"I'd like to hear it."

"I was reluctant to bring it to you," Carter said, in the kind voice. "My wife is in a fragile state. She checked into your hotel with our infant and, as I understand it, was given a room for free."

"She paid cash for the first nights and by card after that."

"Four nights were reversed."

I looked at him.

He had been in the building a day, and he had found out about the billing.

"Someone in accounting talks too much," I said.

"The hotel is giving my wife free housing," Carter went on, "and your manager is spending his nights with her. I've been told he has been seen with her in the kitchen at two in the morning."

I had not told anyone about the kitchen.

I thought about the night clerk, who was twenty-three and had a mother who called him every shift, and I wasn't angry at him.

"Is that true?" the owner asked.

"Yes."

Carter blinked.

It was a small movement, and I saw that he had expected me to deny it.

"Which part?" the owner said.

"All of it," I said. "I reversed a four-night charge on a guest's card, because she had been served with papers that week and I didn't think she should pay for a room while her accounts were frozen. She made me put it back. She was right. I have been in the kitchen with her at two in the morning, and I kissed her."
