Chapter 16: Policy

Libby's POV

I waited until the lobby was empty of guests, and then I walked Nate into the closed kitchen and shut the door.

Charlie was on my shoulder.

My bandaged hand was throbbing, and I was so angry that my voice came out low.

"You offered to quit."

"I did."

"Over a kitchen."

"Over a lot of things. The kitchen was the least of it."

"I didn't ask you to do that."

"No."

"That is the fifth person to decide something about my life without me in the last two months," I said. "I counted. Carter, Taryn, Simone, my lawyer, and you."

"The lawyer told me to wait on the footage, and I waited," Nate said. "I'm not going to argue it. I'll just say I'd do the resignation again, and I'd tell you first this time."

"You'd tell me first."

"I'd ask you first."

I laid Charlie in the stroller I had parked by the door and set the brake.

"Four nights on my card," I said.

"Reversed, and put back."

"Policy, Mr. Ostrow?"

He actually flinched, and then he started to laugh.

It was low and surprised, and he put a hand over his eyes.

"God. You're going to say that for the rest of my life."

"For the rest of your life."

"I deserve it."

"You do."

I stood in front of him with my arms crossed over a sleep shirt and a cardigan, and I looked at the man who had held my son's whole weight on his chest on the worst night of my life.

I had been so ready to hate him.

It would have been so much simpler.

"Here's the thing," I said. "You watched a video for two days and let me keep trusting Taryn. That was a real wrong. I said so in your office, and you didn't argue, and you didn't beg me not to be angry."
