Chapter 18: The Log

My lawyer took the phone out of my hand in the elevator and called Taryn herself.

"Do not open the door," she said. "Go out the back with your daughter's school bag and take your car. Drive to the Alder Hotel. Sit in the café, in a seat the whole room can see. Libby will meet you."

She hung up and looked at me.

"You are not going to her house," she said. "You are going to the one place in this city where he's banned."

"Is that smart?"

"It's public. Nate Ostrow's staff will watch the door."

By ten o'clock I was sitting at the corner table by the mirror.

It was the table where I had first seen my husband kiss another woman.

I had chosen it on purpose.

Nate was at the host stand with his arms folded and his eyes on the lobby door.

Charlie slept in the carrier, warm against my front.

Taryn came in at ten past ten.

She wore a coat over pajama pants, and her curls had come loose.

She held a school backpack against her stomach with both arms.

Two or three guests turned to look at her.

She stopped halfway across the café, and then made herself keep walking.

"Libby."

"Sit down."

She sat in the chair where she had once handed her phone to Simone.

Neither of us said anything for a moment.

A waitress set down a glass of water in front of her and went away fast.

"He came to my house at eight," Taryn said. "He stood on my porch and told me, very kindly, to delete everything."

"Did you?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because on Friday night the school sent me an email." Her voice shook. "Her deposit bounced. The check he gave me was from an account that closed. I called him, and he said it was a clerical thing. Then I called the school office and they told me the account had been closed in October."
