Chapter 4: Served

I needed a lawyer, and I had two hundred dollars of someone else's cash.

I also had a savings account Carter had never heard of.

I opened it at twenty-three with my first real freelance check, and I had kept it going through the whole marriage.

It held six thousand two hundred dollars.

I had never touched it, because some part of me had always wanted an exit I didn't have to explain.

Taryn left at noon, kissing the top of Charlie's head on her way out.

"Call me for anything," she said. "Anything. I mean it."

I sat on the edge of the bed in Room 214 and searched for family lawyers on my phone.

Every website promised compassion and a free consultation.

None of them answered on a Saturday.

At two there was a knock.

Nate stood in the hallway with a paper cup of tea and one folded sheet of hotel stationery.

"This isn't a favor," he said. "It's a phone number."

"Whose?"

"The attorney who handles the hotel's leases. She's in her fifties and she doesn't like to be called on weekends. She also does family law, and she has been bored of people for twenty years."

"You called her?"

"I told her a guest needed help and left it there. She said to call after three." He set the tea on the desk. "The tea is complimentary. I checked."

"You checked?"

"It's on the list," he said. "Line eleven."

I laughed, and then I had to turn toward the window because my eyes had gone hot.

"Thank you," I said.

"The rate is the rate," Nate said, and went back downstairs.

I called at three.

The woman who answered had a rough, dry voice and she did not say hello.
