Chapter 18: The Mother
The Holt hall was full by noon.
The elders sat at the long table under the iron lamps, seven grey heads, and the pack crowded in behind them.
Bastian's mother sat in her high carved chair at the end, stiff and upright, with her hands folded.
She had not been told why she was summoned.
Bastian stood at the wall with his arms at his sides and did not look at me.
I walked up the aisle with Elias on my left and the maid on my right.
I had no chain on my neck and no title, and nobody in that hall said a word against me.
I set the cup on the table in front of the eldest.
"This was in my night tea on the fourth night of my fever, six years ago," I said. "I have come to ask the hall what was in it."
His mother gave a short laugh.
"Valerian and honey," she said. "I have brewed it for forty years."
"Then you will not mind if the healer tastes it."
The old healer came forward from the back of the room.
He was bent and half blind, and he had set the bones of every wolf in the territory.
He lifted the cup and smelled it.
He touched the dried crust with one fingertip and put it to his tongue.
He spat on the floor and went grey.
"Wolfsbane," he said. "Old and boiled down, but it's wolfsbane. A grain of this a night would hold a fever in a wolf for weeks, and a month of it would stop her heart."
The hall made a low, awful noise.
"It is a lie," said Bastian's mother. "She put it there herself."
"Did I?" I said.
"You always wanted attention."
