Chapter 8: Tybee
Cooper woke up in Jonas's bed with the sun in his eyes and the question already in his mouth.
What's at Emory on Thursday?
He rolled over to say it.
Jonas was propped on one elbow beside him, fully dressed.
He held a mug of coffee in one hand and the napkin from the kitchen table in the other.
"Item three," Jonas said. "See the ocean."
Cooper looked at him.
"You're serious."
"It's four hours to Tybee. I called a friend with a house on the north end. The tide's right at noon," Jonas said.
"I have dialysis Wednesday."
"There's a clinic on the island. I made the appointment." Jonas set the napkin on the pillow. "Rule four, Coop. You said you didn't want me stopping you. I'm not stopping you. I'm driving."
The question went back down Cooper's throat.
Later he would tell himself that he had meant to ask on the road, and then at lunch, and then that night.
But he had never seen the ocean, and the truck had a good radio.
Jonas drove with one hand on the wheel and the other resting on Cooper's knee.
They crossed the last causeway at eleven.
Cooper rolled his window down, and the smell reached him before the water did, salt and mud and something green and enormous.
"Oh," he said.
"Wait."
"Is that it? Cooper asked.
"Wait."
Jonas parked at the end of a boardwalk, and Cooper climbed out onto the sand in his work boots.
The beach was nearly empty, gray-gold and wide, with long white lines of surf pulling in and out.
