Chapter 12: Not Waiting for You
I went down the stairs with my coat over Jakub's sweater and my hair still wild from his hands.
"Stay inside," Jakub said behind me.
"No."
"Then I come with you."
"Yes."
He did not say anything else.
He pulled the bolts back one by one and held the door open, and I walked out into the snow.
Across the street, the first black car turned its key and drove away fast.
The two men who had been watching us had seen the sedan arrive, and they did not wait.
That left a street full of fresh snow, and a man in a charcoal overcoat at the foot of the steps.
Brecken looked at me.
His face did something I had never seen it do in two years.
It came apart.
"Freya," he said.
It was not a name.
It was a sound, with all the air gone out of it.
"You're alive."
He took one step and his knees went out.
He caught himself on one hand on the cobbles and stayed there, bent over, with his dark hair falling forward.
His shoulders shook.
I stood on the top step and watched him.
I felt nothing at all, and then I felt everything in the wrong order.
He was thinner, and there was a gray cast to his skin.
His good coat hung off him.
Behind him, a quiet man with a shaved head had come out of the car, and he was standing very still, watching me closely.
"I followed the men who were following you," Brecken said to the snow. "My security found them last night, outside this house. I couldn't sleep. I just came."
"You buried me."
"I buried someone."
"You buried a stranger who was sent to kill me."
His head came up.
