Chapter 24: Snowed In
I unfolded the napkin under the candlesticks.
Under my question, in his square careful capitals, he had written:
"When the pass shuts."
The pass shut at two o'clock on the twenty-second of December, an hour after the minister pronounced us married.
The kirk at Kinlochmorran was packed to the walls in wet coats.
I wore green velvet, with the luckenbooth at my throat, and paint under two of my nails that wouldn't come out.
Finlay wore the kilt and couldn't stop looking at me long enough to find the ring.
Elspeth told him to hurry up from the front pew, out loud, in the middle of the vows.
The whole kirk laughed.
Half my friends from Glasgow were stuck on the far side of the pass in a hotel at Achnasheen.
They kept sending photographs of the snow.
Nobody from my side of the family came.
I'd sent my mother an invitation to an address in Paisley.
It hadn't come back, and she hadn't.
By the end of the ceilidh it was black dark.
The snow was coming down so thick the lamp in the car park was a smudge.
Alasdair found us at the door, red from dancing, with his tie undone.
"You'll not get to Glasgow tonight," he said. "Nor anywhere east. They've shut it at the top."
"I know, Dad."
"House is full of stranded cousins and the minister's sister. But I've kept the tower room for you. Fire's lit. Fresh sheets."
Finlay looked down at me.
I looked up at him.
"We've somewhere," I said.
Alasdair looked from one of us to the other.
Then he started to laugh, and kept laughing, and put his big hand on his son's shoulder.
"Take the tractor down at least," he said. "You'll bog the Land Rover."
"We'll walk the last bit," said Finlay. "It's tradition."
The shack came out of the snow.
But there was a light in it now.
Finlay had come down at noon in his kilt, before the kirk, to lay the stove and light the lamp.
That morning a stranded cousin had asked him where on earth we'd sleep.
"Where she likes," Finlay had said.
