Chapter 24: The Second Wedding
In March the repaired line boat went down the slip at the Joliette with my father's name on her bow.
The Santoni boatmen had scraped her, caulked her and painted her black and white, and they had worked nights and Sundays to finish her.
Ange, said the gold letters on her bow, and under them, Santoni Amarrage.
Six hundred dockers stood along the quay in their orange jackets.
Marie-Ange came forward on Antone's arm in a new black coat, with a pair of silver scissors in her good hand.
She stood in front of the ribbon for a long moment.
"Ange Santoni," she said, in a clear voice, "I am sorry it took us so long."
She cut the ribbon.
The boat slid into the water, and the dockers roared, and the ferry horns went off one after another along the terminal.
My cousin stood at her wheel with his cap on, and he lifted a hand to me.
Antone did not cheer.
He stood with his arm round my shoulders and watched her float, with his jaw working.
I put my hand over his heart and felt it going.
In November, on the eighth, I went to my father's grave first.
I wore the ivory suit again, and nobody had taken it in.
The cemetery was gray with the chrysanthemums of All Saints, and I walked the Corsican row alone.
I had told him to meet me at the church.
He was kneeling at my father's stone in his dark gray suit, with a bunch of white lilies across his arm.
He did not hear me stop behind him.
He laid the flowers against the granite, as they had been laid on the morning of my first wedding, and bowed his head.
