Chapter 23: Mate
They carried Ivar out through the servants' door under a kitchen cloth.
Nobody in that hall spoke until the door closed.
Then the rust lord cleared his throat and said, to no one, "The vote is withdrawn."
Ten lords said "Aye" in one rough voice.
The eleventh, a very old man, said it a heartbeat late and wiped his eyes.
Ketil knelt beside the place where Ivar had been.
He took the old Alpha's ring from the stone where it had rolled, and slid it onto his hand, and stood up.
He did not go to the high seat.
He walked straight across the floor to me, through grease-stained lords and kitchen girls in nightshirts, and stopped an arm's length away.
My heart knocked in my chest.
His answered.
"Mate," said Ketil.
It rang off the roof.
"She is my mate.
"I knew it across a card table at Dunmere, with my hand on her father's note, and I said I did not know her.
"I have lied about it every day since, in front of this hall.
"I will not lie about it again."
