Chapter 24: The High Table
The lords were waiting in the great hall, stiff-backed and sleepless, with the high table scrubbed clean in front of them.
Ketil walked me in by the hand.
I wore the same patched grey smock I had arrived in, because it was the only one I owned.
Every head turned.
"We do not doubt the girl's honesty," said the rust lord.
"Nor her courage, nor that she has saved the Hold.
"But the question must be asked.
"She is the Alpha's mate, and a cook's daughter, and a servant on the Hold's own books until a fortnight ago."
"A mate takes the high seat beside him," said another lord.
"A cook takes a ring of keys and an apron."
"What does she take?"
Ketil opened his mouth.
I squeezed his fingers, and he shut it.
"I'll answer for myself," I said.
I looked at the long table.
There was the Alpha's tall seat, black oak with the wolf's head carved in the back.
Beside it was a second chair, newly dusted, that I knew no one had sat in for eleven years.
