Chapter 17: Withdrawn
Zoya lived on my couch for two weeks.
She was the worst roommate in Boston.
She left cereal bowls on the windowsill. She wiped tattoo ink off her arms with my good towel.
She played music so loud, for the bass, that my landlord came up twice to check on us.
She was also the first person who'd ever been in my kitchen at seven in the morning just because she wanted to be.
On the first morning she made coffee, put a cup in front of me, and signed something slow.
I watched her hands. A flat hand, a fist, a shrug.
"What was that?"
She typed it. TODAY WE WORK. TONIGHT YOU CAN CRY. NOT BOTH.
So we worked.
The Port Authority sent me to a different terminal every day.
A fuel spill on the oil pier. A dead seal in a dry dock. A break room fridge nobody had opened since summer.
I took my housekeeper and my landlord's grandson, and we did all of it right.
The work kept coming. The nurse from the Brigham sent the funeral home. The funeral home sent two others.
