Chapter 24: Whose Life
In March the Boardwalk opened its first rides.
The Ferris wheel on the Steel Pier turned, empty, in the pale light, and the gulls went round it.
I unlocked Pearl's at six and found him already at the counter.
He was in a plain gray apron, with the sleeves of a white shirt rolled to the elbow and a streak of sugar on his forearm.
He was pulling taffy.
I stood in the doorway and watched him.
He was bad at it.
He held the hook too tight, and the candy sagged, and he swore under his breath at it in a low Irish mutter.
"You're strangling it," I said.
"I know."
"You have to let it fall."
"I'm letting it fall." He scowled at the sticky rope. "It doesn't care."
I came around the counter and stood at his shoulder.
I put my hands over his on the hook.
"Like this," I said. "Pull. Let it go. Fold it. Don't fight it. It wants to be soft."
"I'm not that kind of man."
"You're exactly that kind of man," I said. "Pull."
He pulled.
The candy stretched and went pale gold and shining, and he watched it with an open face.
I had given him the job in the second week of February.
