Ishbel's POV
At Hogmanay the Clava ring was black with people and bright with torches, and the snow lay thick on the three old cairns.
Three hundred wolves stood in a wide circle among the beeches.
The sixty-one tied hands stood outside it at the line of the trees, as the law said they must.
I walked out of the ring to them.
A murmur ran round the stones.
A tied hand had no right to be in the ring, and the Grey heir had no right to leave it.
Nobody stopped me.
Coll came at my shoulder with the Chief's knife in his hand, hilt first.
"It's yours," he said, low.
I took it.
The black handle was warm from his palm.
"The Book," I said, and turned.
Dugald stood by the flat stone with the green ledger held against his chest, and a red cord on his wrist.
"Read," I said. "From the first line, in your clerk's voice."
"Ishbel..."
"Every name, Reeve. You wrote them. You can say them."
