Chapter 20: Her Terms
There is a terrace on the roof of the harbor tower that nobody uses, because the wind off the water takes your hair apart.
I stood at the rail with my braid whipping against my neck.
Below me the harbor was a black sheet with lights stitched across it, and somewhere down there was a carousel I could not see.
The door opened behind me.
I didn't turn around.
"You walked out," Cullen said.
"I needed to."
"Was it wrong?"
"It wasn't a review, Cullen. I wasn't grading it."
He came and stood a few feet away.
He had put his jacket back on, but it hung wrong on his shoulders.
"I'm going to give you my terms now," I said.
"All right."
"You don't say all right. You listen, and you tell me where you'll fail."
His mouth moved, not a smile.
"Go ahead."
"One." I held up a finger.
"Nobody gets to be quiet about anything again."
"If you ever find a fact that would hurt me, you walk it to me the same hour."
"I don't care if it's small or if it's your father's."
"Yes."
"If you hold back one thing, I'm gone. No speech. I leave."
