The garden behind the Beacon Hill house had never held more than twenty people at once.
On the day I married, it held two hundred, and Linus had cooked for every one of them.
"Nobody stands near the oven," he said, at the door of the kitchen, wearing a chef's jacket over a tuxedo.
"You're getting married in an hour," I said. "Why are you cooking?"
"I'm not getting married."
"I am."
"You're being married. I'm cooking." He pointed his spoon at my dress. "Go away, you'll get it greasy."
The dress was ivory, plain, and cut at the shoulders to show the locket.
My mother pinned a sprig of lavender to my braid with shaking fingers.
"You smell like my cardigan," I said.
"That's the idea."
Downstairs, in the front row of white chairs, one place had been left empty.
On the seat sat a gray wool cap, a thermos, and a ring of keys on a faded lanyard.
I had asked for those.
I stood in front of the chair for a long moment before I took my place at the back.
"She'd hate this much fuss," I said.
"Who?" said Alister, at my elbow.
"The woman who raised me."
"Then she'd have come anyway," Alister said, "and complained the whole time."
I laughed, and my eyes stung.
He held out his arm.
He wore a dark suit and a face that was trying not to do anything.
