The whole table looked at me, and I did not look away.
"You're right, Margot," I said. "Lizzie never talked back."
"That's the only reason you could rob her for four years."
Her mouth opened and shut.
"The girl who kept quiet in this house is gone," I said. "What you have now is the one you left standing."
A woman near the end of the table set down her napkin and pushed back her chair.
Then three others did, and they left in a rustle of silk without finishing their eggs.
The columnist went last.
She stopped at the dining room door with her notebook against her chest.
"Mrs. Kane, the loans," she said. "May I print the names on the papers?"
"They're public record by Thursday," I said. "You can have them first."
Margot dropped into her chair with both hands flat on the cloth.
She was not looking at me anymore.
She was looking at the window, and her mind was moving behind her face.
