Chapter 19: The Lender
He was a broad, quiet man of sixty in a camel coat, and he sat on Denton's sofa.
He held a green cloth ledger on his knee.
I had put on jeans and Denton's sweater, and my hair was still wet.
Denton stood behind my chair with his arms crossed.
"Mrs. Kane," the lender said. "Forgive the hour. I have been waiting for Mrs. Dray's calls for six days."
"She doesn't take them anymore."
"She owes you how much?" I asked.
"Three million, eight hundred thousand dollars."
He said the number.
"Her paper says forty-one Flynn trucks stand behind it. I have a week's patience left, and then I take the trucks."
"The pledge isn't valid," I said. "She had no board authority."
"No, it isn't," he agreed, with a small, tired smile. "I could spend a year in a courtroom proving it with you."
"The trucks would sit in my yard in the meantime. Trucks that sit earn nothing, and neither does anyone's patience."
