Chapter 15: Annulment
We did not sleep, but we lay on the cot until the windows of the shed went grey.
Joaquin held me with his back against the tin wall and his chin on my hair.
He did not say he forgave anything, and I did not ask him to.
He only breathed, slow and even, and now and then his thumb moved over my wrist.
At seven the family lawyer called, and I put her on speaker.
"The judge will not hear the annulment this morning," she said. "The petition names fraud, and the court wants briefs."
"Friday at ten."
"That is good," Joaquin said.
"It is not all." Her voice tightened. "Your uncle has called an emergency session of the board for two o'clock."
"The agenda is a vote of confidence in the chief executive, on grounds of the alleged fraud."
"He cannot call that with no notice."
"The bylaws give the chairman twelve hours in a crisis. He wrote them."
I closed my eyes.
