Chapter 7: What I Own

I sat up against the headboard and decided to tell her.

It was the first time in six years I had made that decision without a spreadsheet.

"The man in the restroom is Sullivan Greer," I said. "He's an actor."

"The man who's buying my buildings is an actor."

"He's the face of Halden Row. I hired him."

Emerson pulled the sheet up to her chin and stared at me.

"You hired him."

"Six years ago, in London. I was twenty-five, with thirty-eight thousand dollars and a spreadsheet. Nobody would give me a meeting." I rubbed the back of my neck. "I needed an investor to look across a table and see someone who looked like money."

"So you rented a man."

"I rented a man," I said. "Mr. S. The S is for Sullivan. I wrote the legend, he learned it, and I stayed in the back with the numbers."

She was quiet for a long time.

"You're saying Halden Row is yours."

"I founded it. I own sixty-one percent."

"Halden Row," she said slowly, "has forty-one billion dollars under management."

"Forty-one point two, as of the quarter."

She laughed, a sharp short sound, and swung her legs off the bed.

She pulled on the swim team shirt and took her phone from the nightstand.

For a minute she scrolled with her mouth set.

"There's no photo of the founder," she said. "Anywhere. Not one."

"That's the point."

"There's Mr. S on every page." She turned the screen toward me, and Sullivan's white smile looked up from a magazine cover. "There's nothing of you."

"I need you to call someone," I said. "Hold on."

I dialed Ottilie, and it rang once.

"Boss," said her flat voice. "It's a quarter to five in the morning."
