Chapter 18: Cabin Four
Huck closed the rulebook and set it on the quilt.
He didn't stand.
The lamp on the nightstand threw his shadow up the log wall.
The cabin was cold, because the stovepipe was bad and nobody had lit the stove.
It smelled like cedar and dust and the wool blanket my dad kept on every bed.
"Ackley," he said.
"Let me talk first."
He nodded.
I stood with my back against the bolted door.
I'd rehearsed this walking down the row of cabins, and all of it went out of my head.
"You spent your house on a woman you barely know," I said. "So I could open my mouth on my own show."
"That's not why you should..."
"I said let me talk."
He shut his mouth.
"You told your father before you told the camera," I said. "You didn't make me say a word."
He was gripping the edge of the mattress.
"And you stood in that door and asked. You didn't take one step in."
"I'd have stood there all day."
"I know. That's the point."
I pushed off the door.
"I'm not choosing you because you're sorry," I said. "Sorry's cheap. Kip's sorry on camera twice a day."
"Then why?"
"Because I've watched you pay for it for three days, and you haven't asked for anything back."
I stopped in front of him.
"I'm choosing you, Huck. Out loud. Before anything happens in this room, so you know I'm not just swept up in it."
He looked up at me.
His eyes were wet behind his glasses.
"Say it again," he said.
"I choose you."
He stood up slowly.
He put his hand on my jaw the way he had on night one.
"There's no camera in this cabin," I said. "It's the only building on the place he didn't rent. I checked it myself before supper."
"You checked it before supper?"
"I was hoping."
He laughed, low and broken, and his forehead came down against mine.
"No stepping back," I said.
