Chapter 17: The Meter Man
Rand ran the license number that night.
It belonged to a man in Apache Junction who'd been a licensed electrician for thirty-one years.
It had lapsed three years ago, the month he stopped paying his renewal.
"I'll send an investigator," Rand said.
"No. He'll lie to an investigator." I was already pulling on my boots. "He won't lie to me."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm going to talk shop."
Breck drove me out on Saturday morning in his big truck, and parked at the corner where the man couldn't see him.
"Text me every ten minutes," he said. "Or I'm coming in, and I'm not subtle."
The house was a single-wide on a gravel lot with a carport made of sheet metal.
There was an old service truck under it, white gone chalky, with a faded logo scraped off the door.
The meter on the side of the trailer was sealed with a brand I knew.
I knocked.
He opened the door with the chain on. Late sixties, gray stubble, a sleeveless undershirt, forearms covered in the same little white burn scars I had on my thumb.
