Chapter 27: Grandmother

Dorothea Crandall stood in my kitchen at twenty past six in the morning, holding a covered glass dish in both hands.

She wore a cream linen suit and a single strand of pearls.

She was small, which surprised me, because her son was so tall.

She had Abram's dark brown eyes, and her silver hair was short and perfect at dawn.

We'd all come downstairs in whatever we could find.

I was in Abram's gray T-shirt.

Breck wore jeans and stood behind the island so nobody would look at the rest of him.

Rand had put on a tie, which was how he handled a crisis.

"Abram," his mother said.

"Mother."

"Fifteen years." She looked him up and down. "You've gone gray."

"You haven't."

"I'm very disciplined."

Then she turned to me, and her whole face changed into a smile.

"You must be Codi. I'm Dorothea. I brought chicken and rice. It's the only thing I make, and it's very good."

She put the dish in my hands. It was still warm.

"I watched you on that lift four times," she said.

"Nobody has ever made my son stand up in public. You did it in a hard hat."

I didn't know what to say.

Nobody over forty had ever told me I'd done something right, and meant it, in my kitchen.
