Chapter 29: The Vault
On Sunday afternoon the Copper Room was closed, and the brass door opened for Abram's mother.
He'd told us on Tuesday that she wanted to see the vault.
He'd said it first, out loud, at the kitchen island, with all of us there.
Rule seven. I'd noticed, and I'd been proud of him.
Breck stood by the bar in a clean shirt, trying to look like a man who owned a club.
Rand had a legal pad he never wrote on.
The cook had Hazel on her hip in the kitchen and had told everyone to leave her alone.
Dorothea came in on Abram's arm, in a sage linen suit, and stopped just inside the door.
She looked at the dark wood bar, the copper lamps, and the high old ceiling.
"The tellers' cages stood here," she said. "Harold used to point. He was six the first time he saw them."
Nobody said anything.
She walked the length of the room with one gloved hand just above the wood.
Then she went down the basement stairs, slowly, one at a time, and Abram stayed close behind her.
The old vault door stood open in the wine room, fourteen inches thick, steel and brass.
