Chapter 39: Lunch
Rand's POV
The text arrived on Saturday night, and it was addressed to me.
I read it standing at the pool house window, where I'd gone to be alone and found Breck already there eating cereal.
"Mr. Stokely. I find the sensible one is usually the one to speak to. Tea, one o'clock. Do come by yourself. I'd like to be plain."
I carried my phone to the kitchen and put it on the island in front of all three of them.
That was rule seven. I'm not good at rules I didn't write, and I followed that one to the letter.
"She's splitting us," Breck said.
"Obviously."
"Go," Abram said, quietly. "If you want to."
"I want to," I said. "I'll want to know what she says more than I'll want to avoid hearing it."
Codi taped the recorder to my ribs on Sunday morning, in the bathroom, with black electrical tape.
She did it carefully, with her tongue between her teeth.
"If you sweat, it slips," she said.
"I don't sweat."
