Codi's POV
The courthouse in Prescott sat in the middle of the square with a lawn around it and old men on the benches.
Dorothea's windows looked straight down on it.
I knew because I looked up, and a curtain moved.
The courtroom was smaller than I'd expected and smelled of floor wax.
We took the left table, all four of us, with Rand in the middle and a binder in front of him.
Hazel was with the cook at the club. Rand had said a baby in a courtroom was a prop, and Dorothea was the one who used props.
Across the aisle sat Dorothea in navy, with her thin lawyer and one folder.
She nodded to me, kindly.
I nodded back, because I'd been raised by Starla, and Starla taught me to smile at anyone while I decided how to hurt them.
The judge was a stout man with a gray mustache and reading glasses on a string.
He read for a long time before he said a word.
"I have a petition for grandparent visitation," he said. "A motion for temporary placement in the grandmother's home. And a motion, filed Thursday night, to order genetic testing of the child, the acknowledged father, and every adult man in the household."
