I told the three of them in the truck on the way home from Prescott, and I said it before anyone else could say anything.
"I'm going to see my mother."
Nobody argued.

Breck drove me out to the women's prison complex at Perryville on Tuesday morning and parked in the visitors' lot with the engine running.
"I'll be right here," he said. "I brought a book."
"You brought a hammer."
"A book and a hammer. I'm a man of range."
Rand had given me a one-page form in a clear sleeve.
A release, it said, allowing the person named to request the inmate's visitor records.
"She has to sign it herself," he said. "She doesn't have to give you anything for it. She does have to want to."
The visiting room had low tables bolted to the floor and a vending machine that hummed.
My mother came through a steel door with a guard behind her.
