Chapter 17: Nothing Asked Back
The lobby guard put his hand up before Rodrigo reached the turnstile.
"Sir, your badge is cancelled. I'm sorry."
"I know. I'm the chairman, and I'm coming up."
"Not today, sir."
Valeria stepped around her husband with a hand under her belly.
"Then call the board chair and tell him the chairman's wife is in the lobby."
"She's five months pregnant," Fabiola added from behind, holding up her court lanyard. "And I'm a witness."
The guard looked at the lanyard, then at the belly.
He picked up the phone.
Two minutes later, the doors of the thirty-second floor opened on a long oval table and nine faces.
Aurora sat at the foot of it in pale blue, with her hands folded.
The cousin sat on her right, with a blank vote sheet squared in front of him.
"Poor dear," Aurora said. "This is a private session."
"I'm here as his wife," Valeria said. "I'll sit by the wall."
The board chair, a thin man with half-moon glasses, cleared his throat and nodded at a chair.
Valeria sat.
Rodrigo walked the length of the table and stood at the head.
Aurora rose before he could speak.
"I move that my son be removed as chairman for cause," she said gently. "He has been unwell since the hospital video. He has spoken in public against his own family. He has failed to attend meetings."
"Seconded," said the cousin.
"Before you vote," Rodrigo said, "I ask to speak for the minutes."
The chair looked at Aurora.
Aurora smiled and sat down.
"Let him. It will help the record."
Rodrigo put both hands on the table.
"Five years ago, before my wedding, my mother took two medical files to the family clinic."
"I was told my wife could never have children. I believed it. I let her carry that for five years."
