Chapter 19: The Heir Toast
Rodrigo stood on the club's front steps for forty minutes and shook the hand of every guest his mother had invited.
The ballroom behind him held four hundred people, a string quartet and two enormous screens.
He kept his hands in his pockets whenever nobody was looking at them.
He had followed the rules for eight weeks.
Valeria's car stopped at the curb at ten to eight.
Fabiola got out first, in a green dress and her court lanyard, which she had refused to take off.
Then Valeria stepped out in the navy dress she had once told her sister she wore only to funerals.
It fit over the curve of her belly, and her hair was up, and she did not look like anyone who had been escorted off a lawn.
Rodrigo forgot how to move.
She climbed the first step, and her heel caught on the stone.
He had her elbow before he thought.
"Rule four," Valeria said, without looking at him.
"Your rule."
"That's what I just said."
"No. You said it like it was a wall. It's your rule, and you made it, and I've kept it for eight weeks." He did not let go of her elbow. "Break it or keep it. But don't pretend it's mine."
Her eyes came up.
They were very dark in the light from the doors.
Fabiola, three steps above them, turned and became deeply interested in the architecture.
"We're on the steps of your mother's club," Valeria said, low. "Four hundred people are about to look at us."
"Then let them see me hold your arm up a flight of stairs."
