Chapter 10: Burn the Island

Rhys's POV

The tall man woke up on the sand with his own belt around his wrists.

I let him get a good look at my face before I said a word.

"Where's your phone?"

"I don't have one."

I put my knee on the middle of his sternum.

"Left chest pocket," he said, very quickly.

I took it out.

It was a satellite phone, black and heavy, and I held it up to the last of the light.

One new message from Veda.

*Report.*

I had known Veda Lorne for ten years.

She was my father's assistant when I took over his docks.

She was the one who taught me how to read a cargo manifest.

She had sat beside me at his funeral and put her hand over mine.

Eleven days ago she had told me over a late dinner, "You're the best thing that ever happened to this company."

I looked at the word on the screen and felt my stomach turn over.

Behind me, Lena was walking the stocky man up the hill with Abel at his back.

She hadn't looked at me since I'd dragged my opponent out of the surf.

I understood that.

I had spent fourteen hours on the water in a boat that wanted to die.

For the first six, I was sure I would find my wife and child dead.

For the next eight, I was sure I deserved to.

There was one thing I had never said to Lena in two years of marriage.

It was about a gray waterproof folder that had sat in the bottom drawer of our dresser.
