Chapter 13: The Ultimatum
I crossed the parking lot and got into the passenger seat without a word.
Benedict turned off the engine.
His hands stayed on the wheel.
"Ask me," he said.
"Did you write it?"
"Yes."
"The card. The Saugatuck house, the day he marries."
"I wrote it at Preston's twenty-fourth birthday dinner, at the club, with the pen from my jacket."
His voice was level, and that made it worse.
"He had quit two jobs that year, and I was tired of paying for a boy who wouldn't stand up."
"I thought a wife might make him steady."
"A wife."
"I meant any wife. I didn't think about who she would be."
I stared at the dashboard.
"Did you know about Kendall?"
"No."
"Did you know he proposed to me because of your card?"
"No. I found out ten minutes ago with the window down, the same as you."
"You never asked who I was."
"No."
"A year, Benedict. He was engaged to me for a year."
"I had a deal in Dubai, and I told myself a dinner could wait."
"I was glad he had finally done one thing I asked, and I did not ask what it cost."
He turned his head and looked at me.
"It cost you," he said. "I wrote the sentence, and you paid for it."
"Say the rest."
"There isn't a rest. I can't make it smaller than that."
I wanted him to defend himself.
I wanted him to say it was Preston's choice, and Kendall's, and not his.
He didn't, and I could not find the place to put my anger.
"Drive," I said.
"Where?"
"Home. Yours."
He drove.
Neither of us spoke on Fullerton, or Clark, or the last quiet block of Lincoln Park.
He parked at the curb, and I was out of the car before he had the key out of the ignition.
