Chapter 20: Friday

At eight fifty-five on Friday, I sat in the armchair of suite 1412 with a glass of water I had not touched.

The room was the same.

The same dark wood, the same wide bed, the same window over Lake Shore Drive with the city lights spread beneath it.

I wore a black silk robe over nothing and had put my hair up with a pin.

At nine exactly, there was a knock.

I let him knock twice.

Then I said, "It's open."

Benedict came in and closed the door behind him.

He stood on the carpet in his charcoal suit, with the note in one hand.

He looked at me for a long time.

"You came," I said.

"I'd have come at midnight."

"At nine, that makes you on time."

"I'm learning."

"Sit down."

He crossed the room and sat on the end of the bed.

"I told Gran on the phone yesterday that my verdict was yours to hear first," I said.

"She said she'd keep a place at the table for me anyway."

"She will."

"Here's my answer."

He didn't speak.

His hands lay on his knees, and I saw the knuckles whiten.

"The card," I said.

"I forgive the card."

"You wrote it to a boy who was lost and you never thought about who it would land on."

"It's a stupid, careless thing, and it's done."

His shoulders moved, just slightly.

"I don't forgive the not asking."
