Chapter 13: Terms
The terms were written on the tailgate of the second wagon, in Sella's herb pencil.
It was the only flat board in Hollin Weir that Brant had not chalked.
The wagon stood inside the miller's stone cart shed, where the walls kept sound.
Outside in the lane, Brant was giving a speech to the grey.
Nobody could hear it, and he had not noticed.
Naho sat on an upturned bucket with her glasses pushed up and the ferryman's rope across her knees.
She had spent six years correcting other people's words, and she knew where the trouble lived.
It lived in the third clause.
"One," she said. "I lead. Not command, lead. I say who is asked, who is not asked, and when."
"Two. When I tell you to name a maker, you name the maker, aloud, to whoever is in the room."
"Three. If you take credit, I say so the same hour with everyone listening. Nobody gets to call it a misunderstanding afterward."
Alric stood by the shed door in his undershirt and a soldier's spare blanket.
He had listened to the whole list without once tilting his chin.
