Chapter 3: Not Leaving
Jonas refuses, Suzette stays in his bed, and an envelope names trial two.
I took Suzette into the study with me, because I wasn't leaving her in a hallway.
My grandfather sat behind his desk with his cane across his knees.
He didn't look at the gym bag.
He looked at her torn dress, and then at her face.
"Miss Whitaker. I'm sorry for the evening."
"You aren't," Suzette said. "But thank you."
Amos almost smiled.
"Jonas. The second trial."
"I heard it on the phone."
"And?"
"No."
The room went quiet.
"You have not heard the terms," Amos said.
"I don't need them. She's not going anywhere."
"Then you will fail, and the chair passes to Desmond."
"Then it passes to Desmond."
I put the gym bag on his desk.
"That's your four hundred thousand. Trial one. I'll take trial two on any other day of the week, but not this one."
My grandfather looked at me for a long time.
Suzette's hand found mine.
"Go home, both of you," Amos said at last. "The envelope will come in the morning."
In the hall her shoulders sank with relief.
"He's testing you with me."
"I know."
"You said no anyway."
"I'd say it again."
She stopped walking, and she turned me by the lapels.
Her green eyes were wet and angry and very bright.
"Take me home, Jonas."
"Which home?"
"Yours."
The townhouse on Spruce Street had been my grandfather's gift, and I had slept in it exactly eleven nights.
I didn't turn on the lights.
I shut the door behind us, and Suzette backed me against it and kissed me.
She kissed me like she'd been holding her breath in that warehouse for two hours.
I got my hands in her hair, and I turned us around, and she hit the door with a thump.
"Say it again," she said against my mouth.
"What?"
"No."
"No," I said, and I kissed her throat.
She laughed, a hard, shaky sound, and she pulled at my belt.
I took her torn dress by the shoulder and finished the job.
The fabric split down to her hip, and she stood there in the hall in black lace and bare feet, flushed and breathing hard.
She was curvy and soft and strong, and I had been mad for her since the first night.
"Upstairs," I said.
"Here."
"Suzette."
"Here, Jonas. Now."
I picked her up, and she locked her legs around my waist.
I carried her three steps and set her on the hall table, and the vase on it fell and rolled away.
Neither of us looked.
I pushed her bra strap off her shoulder and took her nipple in my mouth.
She arched, and her heels dug into my back.
"God, your mouth."
I sucked until she was gasping, and then I moved to the other side.
Her fingers got into my hair and pulled hard.
I got her panties down her legs, and I dropped to my knees on the cold floor.
"Jonas."
"Hold on to the table."
She did.
I spread her thighs wide and put my mouth on her.
She was hot and slick, and she tasted like salt and heat.
I licked her slowly, flat and deep, and then I found her clit and worked it with the tip of my tongue.
She cried out, and her hips rocked against my face.
I slid two fingers inside her, and she clenched so tight I felt her all the way to my knuckles.
"Don't stop," she begged. "Don't you dare stop."
I didn't.
I crooked my fingers and sucked her clit, and she came apart on my tongue with her head thrown back and her whole body shaking.
I stood up before she finished shivering.
I opened my pants, and my cock was so hard it hurt.
She looked down at it and bit her lip.
"Give it to me."
I took her by the hips and dragged her to the edge of the table.
I pushed in slow, one deep inch at a time, and she was so wet and tight I had to stop halfway and breathe.
"All of it," she said.
I gave her all of it.
She moaned into my shoulder, and I held there, buried to the root, while she clutched my back.
Then I fucked her.
I fucked her hard against that table, with her legs around my waist and her nails in my shoulders, until the whole hall shook.
"Harder," she said.
I went harder.
"Tell me whose you are," I said, low in her ear.
"Yours. Yours, Jonas."
Her pussy tightened around me, and she came again with a broken cry.
It pulled me over.
I groaned her name and spilled inside her, shaking, with my forehead against hers.
For a long moment we didn't move.
"I thought I'd lost you," I said.
"I know."
"Don't scare me like that."
"I'll try," she said, and she kissed me, and I felt her smile.
At seven the next morning, a courier left a cream-colored envelope on the front step.
Inside was one line in my grandfather's handwriting.
"Friday, 6 p.m., Local 12 Union Hall, Delaware Avenue. Win the room."
