On the morning of the wedding, my oldest mechanic tied my tie three times.
"Hold still," he said.
"I am holding still."
"You're vibrating."
We were in the vestry of the church on Atwells Avenue, a stone room that smelled of candle smoke and floor wax.
The tailor's charcoal suit hung on me as it had on the day I owed him for it.
That suit was paid for now, down to the cent.
The invoice sat in my pocket with a line in Rosalia's handwriting across the bottom.
Paid in full by the groom. Interest waived by the Don.
Eight other men in rented black suits crowded the little room, and the youngest held his daughter in a blue blanket.
"Don't let her near the wine," the youngest said.
"She's four months old."
"Then don't let her near it later."
They laughed, and I laughed with them, and my hands finally stopped shaking.
Someone knocked once, a short hard rap I knew.
